01. Apple iPad Air (5th Gen, 2022)

The best tablet for schoolchildren overall

Specifications

Weight: 462g

Dimensions: 9.74 inches x 7.02 0.24 inches. 0.24 inches

Storage: 64GB, 256GB

Screen size: 10.9-inch

We were huge admirers of the 2020 iPad Air, and we were able to rate it as the best tablet for students from the moment it was released. This year, the Apple iPad Air (5th Gen, 2022) has snatched away its predecessor’s crown with a level of power that’s very close to making it the iPad Pro. It’s a powerful, slim and lightweight tablet, now with Apple’s M1 chip which is the major improvement over its predecessor.

As we looked over it, we found that this processor upgrade has made the iPad Air capable of handling practically any task that comes to it, which includes the top arts apps like Procreate and the best Video Editing software. When you consider that it’s less expensive the iPad Pro, for us this makes it the best tablet for students in general.

The screen we tested proved to be vibrant and sharp The front camera and USB-C are upgraded from the previous devices (there’s also the possibility of 5G connectivity. The updated iPadOS includes desktop workflows, including multi-tasking windows that help you work faster. Read our full Apple iPad Air (5th Gen) review for more information.

02. iPad Mini (6th Gen, 2021)

The best student tablet for carrying around

Specifications

Weight: 293g

Dimensions: 195.4×134.8×6.3mm

Screen dimension: 8.3-inch IPS LCD

Storage: 64GB/256GB

Ever since it received Apple Pencil support the iPad Mini has been a definite choice for us, and the update in September 2021 improved it into a superior alternative by introducing Apple Pencil 2 compatibility. Also, it got an enhancement to its processor, making it a powerful and compact mini device.

This version is based upon a reworked version of the A15 Bionic chip, which is designed for fast processing. Although some users might be frustrated because of the only 4GB of RAM in actuality, it should be adequate for the tasks you’d want to do using a screen this small. The small dimensions and weight (less that 300g) make the tablet ideal to take on the road such as on the road, for instance.

There’s a very gratifying USB-C port, which can open up an array of possibilities. As an example, when we evaluated the tablet we tried it using a USB DAW to listen to the Apple Lossless Hi-Res music, and using an USB microphone to record a voiceover. The display is a little larger than that of the last iPad Mini, even though its overall body is smaller in size, and features a 3:1 aspect ratio. The brightness was found to be very even and comfortable to use for long durations, and we were very impressed by the precision of colour. While you’re paying the premium Apple price, we believe an iPad Mini 2021 will provide good value for money.

03. iPad Pro 12.9 (2021)

The ideal tablet for students people taking courses in creativity.

Specifications

Weight: 682g

Dimensions: 280.6 x 214.9 x 6.4mm

Storage: 128GB/256GB/512GB/1TB/2TB

Screen size: 12.9-inch

The main benefit of the iPad Mini is its portability however, if your field subject requires an extra power source (and that you’ve got a bigger budget) it is recommended to buy using the iPad Pro 12.9 (2021) as the top tablet for students for those on creative courses. Since it is Apple’s strongest tablet, it doesn’t come with the most affordable price tag but it’s an instrument that can tackle all of the demanding work in design and graphics with Mac-like power. Combine it with mice and keyboards, and you could be used as a portable laptop.

The HDR display is among the best one we’ve had on any tablet, with 120Hz of refresh and a resolution of 2048 x 2732. Its maximum brightness is 1600nits, and with better control over local dimming, it’s more pleasing to stare at for long periods. We found darker areas to contain more nuance and depth that they provide, creating an improved and more precise image that is great for editing video and photos.

Of course, we’re hesitant to suggest this as the top tablet for students due to the price. We’d suggest splashing out on if you really need the specs you need to run the latest editing software. In that department, it isn’t going to disappoint.

04. Surface Pro 9

The ideal tablet for students users who are looking for a PC

The most suitable tablets for students in 2023.
SPECIFICATIONS

Weight: 0.9g

Dimensions 28.7 x 20.8 * 0.93 cm

Storage: 256GB / 512GB

Screen size: 13-inch

It’s the Microsoft Surface pro 9 is an extremely powerful tablet that has the same capabilities as the iPad Pro, can be turned into a decent desktop computer by clicking in the cover/keyboard combination. What’s important to note here is the build – the Intel i5 and i7 models are superb high-end devices, while they are not as powerful. The 5G SQ3 model was designed to last battery life and so lacks some power to run the most complex software.

For the money, I’d opt for that Intel i5 model that can run full programs like Photoshop without difficulty and be coupled with the superior Surface Pro stylus and keyboard for a complete solution. Our Surface Pro 9 review found it to be a great choice if you want to replace your laptop with a robust and flexible tablet (that’s also an laptop) and are tied to Windows and Windows 8, then Surface Pro 9 is an ideal choice.

If you’re looking for an affordable web-browsing and cloud-based tablet for online courses and writing you, consider the 5G model is ideal (though there are cheaper tablets on this list that can do this as well).

Whichever model you choose – be sure to choose the Intel models – the Surface Pro 9 is a top-quality tablet, with stunning display, and a lightweight and tactile construction. One of the best features is that this updated Surface Pro can use the pen and keyboard of Surface Pro 8. Surface Pro 8, saving the user money when upgrading.

05. Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra

The most large-screen Android tablet for students

SPECIFICATIONS

Weight: 726g

Dimensions 326.4 x 208.6 x 5.5mm

Screen size: 14.6-inch

Storage: 128GB – 512GB

If you prefer an Android tablet with ample power, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra delivers that, and for reasonable prices considering its specs. You’ll have a tremendous screen for a tablet : 14.6 inches, which is dwarfed by the biggest iPad Pro. It’s a good choice for those who want to write notes or sketch with it with the S Pen stylus, which can be found in the standard and provides even more value for money for a high-end tablet.

You can bump the specs to pretty high-end configurations also, which include up to 16GB in RAM and 512GB storage. Of course, its size makes this heavier than most of the other options on our list of the best tablets designed for students. However, it is not as portable. But we liked the slim, sleek look as we examined the tablet and found it to be ideal for watching videos and even editing photos. If you don’t need all the specs of the Ultra model, you may want to opt for the standard Tab S8.

Noting that there’s been issues with availability in the US due to the huge demand, but Samsung’s Samsung store does now have stocks available. There are also import alternatives available on Amazon.
